The five-time world champions, Australia, began their World Cup campaign on a disappointing note. Following their defeat to India in their opening game, the Australians suffered another setback, this time against South Africa. In a one-sided contest, South Africa thoroughly outplayed Australia, winning the game by a commanding margin of 134 runs. This defeat currently places Australia near the bottom of the points table.

Australia's troubles commenced early in their pursuit of a 312-run target. The top three batters fell quickly, leaving Australia reeling at a mere 50 runs for the loss of three wickets. Within a matter of minutes, they also lost three more wickets, making the score 70/6. Although Marnus Labuschagne (46) and Mitchell Starc (27) put up some resistance with a 49-run partnership, their resistance was short-lived. Following their dismissals, Australia's entire batting lineup crumbled like a house of cards, ultimately getting bowled out for a paltry total of 177 runs. South Africa's bowlers displayed complete dominance, with contributions from all. Kagiso Rabada claimed three wickets (3/33), while Marco Jansen (2/54), Keshav Maharaj (2/30), and Tabriaz Shamsi (2/38) each secured two wickets.

The first innings painted a starkly different picture, as South Africa's batters made merry on this pitch. Opener de Kock (109) notched his second consecutive century in the World Cup, ably supported by Temba Bavuma (35) and van der Dussen (26). Aiden Markram (56), who had scored a century in the previous match, impressed with a half-century this time. Thanks to their collective efforts, South Africa posted a formidable total of 311/7 in their 50 overs.

With two consecutive victories, South Africa is set to face the Netherlands on October 17, full of confidence. Meanwhile, Australia, suffering two consecutive losses, will take on Sri Lanka on October 16 in search of a turnaround in their fortunes.

Scorecard:

South Africa: 311/7 (50 overs)

Australia: 177/10 (40.5 overs)
