KURNOOL: Five pilgrims hailing from Nandyal district of Andhra Pradesh, were killed on the spot in a ghastly road accident in Karnataka in the early hours of Tuesday. At least, 13 others sustained grievous injuries when a sports utility vehicle (SUV) they were traveling in crashed into a stationary truck at Padichakra village in Yadgir district of Karnataka.

According to the Saidapur police, the deceased were identified as Muneer (38), Naymt Ulla (40), Muddasir (12), Rameeja (50) and Summi (12). All the pilgrims were from Vellagud village in Atmakur Taluk of Nandyal district and were on the way to attend the Khwaja Bande Nawaz Urus fair in Kalaburagi district of Karnataka. The injured were shifted to a nearby hospital in Kalaburgi for treatment and their condition is said to be critical.

The police said that at about 2 am, the driver lost control over the vehicle and hit a stationary truck at Padichakra village in Yadgir district. Under the severe impact of the crash, five persons perished on the spot while 13 others received severe multiple injuries, they added.

A case has been registered by the police and further investigations are underway. Meanwhile, Srisailam MLA Silpa Chakrapani Reddy expressed grief over the incident and assured the bereaved families of all necessary support.
