AMARAVATI: Over 50,000 women beneficiaries, who were given house sites in Andhra Pradesh two years ago, are reportedly refusing to build houses under a government scheme, for a variety of reasons.

According to some reports quoting officials of the Andhra Pradesh Housing Department, the beneficiaries have asked the state government to provide them with alternative sites because the layouts currently proposed are either too far away from human habitations or too close to burial grounds.

The government is now in a difficult situation since meeting their demand of locating alternative sites will only mean an additional expenditure of Rs 800 crore. The State government officials say that 30.3 lakh house site pattas had been distributed to the beneficiaries in the State.

According to the State government, only about 50,000 beneficiaries (1.5 percent) have requested for alternate land instead of the land allotted to them for a variety of reasons, including distance from their place of residence and proximity to a burial ground among others.

Chief Minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy was informed of this tricky issue by departmental officials at a recent meeting. YS Jagan reportedly gave the department the go-ahead for locating alternate land sites to ensure that all the beneficiaries were completely satisfied.

The Housing Department officials have requested that the District Collectors to initiate steps to find suitable alternate land sites in their respective districts.
