AMARAVATI: As part of its efforts to reduce road accidents in Andhra Pradesh, the State Government has come up with a new initiative to establish a revolving fund of Rs 50 crore to strengthen road safety.

Chief Secretary Dr KS Jawahar Reddy on Wednesday convened a review meeting on road safety in the Secretariat at Velagapudi. He issued orders establishing a revolving fund of Rs 50 crore and asked the officials to deposit 2 per cent of the estimate of road infrastructure projects to the fund.

Jawahar Reddy suggested officials improve the junctions on main roads and repair the black spots. Apart from that, the officials should also focus on carrying out an extensive campaign to sensitise two-wheeler users about wearing of helmets and seat belts for those riding four-wheelers, he said.

Taking a serious note on drunken driving by vehicle users, the Chief Secretary asked the officials to initiate stern action against those caught driving vehicles under the influence of alcohol. He also suggested officials to ensure installation of signboards to prevent accidents in the vicinity of schools, colleges and places of worship and remove dangerous hoardings and flexes along the main roads.
