AMARAVATI: Andhra Pradesh Crime Investigation Department (CID) chief N Sanjay has warned that the CID will take strict action against those who try to create unrest by posting obscene content on social media.

Addressing a press conference at the AP Secretariat in Velagapudi on Wednesday, Sanjay said that inappropriate content was being posted not only on Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy and his family members, but had become a routine affair for a section of people to post obscene content on the ruling, opposition party leaders, judges, celebrities, high-ranking officials and individuals holding various positions in the society.

Sanjay said that the CID found that such misdeeds increased in the wake of the upcoming elections in the State. “We have started a war to suppress such misdeeds and create a harmonious atmosphere in the state. Measures have been taken to increase discipline, policing and legal responsibility in the field of social media. For this purpose, the CID already constituted special teams and a monitoring cell,” he said.

The CID chief said that technology played an essential role in identifying and controlling those who put obscene and insulting postings on social media, apart from procuring technical equipment. Conferences will be held in Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam in the coming weeks to formulate a plan to investigate case by case with the help of people and industry to manage social media.

Sanjay also said that CID teams were constituted to monitor the accounts of the NRIs who operate from the United Kingdom (UK) and the United States of America (USA). Informing that the steps taken by the CID to control obscene and insulting postings on social media, he said that cases were filed against those who posted obscene content on judges of the Andhra Pradesh High Court.

On action initiated by the CID, he said that as many as 1,450 social media postings were deleted in 2022 and 2,164 in 2023. Apart from that, as many as 1,465 social media accounts were monitored out of that 202 were abusive and 31 were objectionable accounts. Similarly, as many as 2,972 cyber bully sheets were opened, 45 MLAT and five LOC proceedings were issued, he added.
