Former Minister Gummadi Kutuhalamma passes away
According to her family members, Kuthuhalamma passed away in her sleep at her home in Tirupati
TIRUPATI: Veterain politician from Chittoor district and former Minister in the undivided Andhra Pradesh Gummadi Kuthuhalamma passed away on Wednesday at her residence in Tirupati. According to her family members, Kuthuhalamma passed away peacefully in her sleep.
A doctor by profession, she entered politics in 1978 contesting for chairperson of Chittoor Zilla Parishad as a rebel candidate of the Congress party and later went on to serve the high position of Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly.
Kuthuhalamma later joined the Congress and contested from the Vepanjeri Assembly constituency, currently known as GD Nellore, in 1985, 1989, 1999 and 2004 elections and won from Gangadhara Nellore constituency in 2009. She lost the election in 1994 after being denied a ticket from the Congress and in 2014, contesting as a candidate of the TDP.
She served as the Minister of Health in the Nethurmalli Janardhana Reddy cabinet between 2002 and 2023 and as the Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly during the YS Rajasekhara Reddy-led Government from 2004.
Andhra Pradesh Governor Biswabhushan Harichandan, who was recently appointed as Governor of Chattisgarh, and Chief Minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy expressed grief over the demise of Kuthuhalamma and conveyed their condolences to the bereaved family members.
