Ministry of Jal Shakti to release Rs 17,148 Cr for Polavaram, okays repairs to diaphragm wall

AMARAVATI: Ministry of Jal Shakti on Tuesday directed its officials to prepare a memorandum for a grant of Rs 17,148 crore for the Polavaram project in Andhra Pradesh. The memorandum would be sent to the Union Cabinet for approval so that this tranche of funds could be released before July 31, 2023.
The ministry, while directing the Central Water Commission (CWC) and the Polavaram Project Authority (PPA) to set the stage for the release of the funds, also agreed in principle to allow repairs to the damaged diaphragm wall.
Earlier, in March 2023, the Dam Design Review Panel (DDRP) of the Polavaram Irrigation Project gave its approval for the repair of the damaged portion of the diaphragm wall after the satisfactory structural stability report submitted by the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC).
Parts of the wall had collapsed in two places during the recent Godavari floods and the remaining 700-metre-long wall was intact. The Andhra Pradesh Government estimated that an additional Rs 2,000 crore would have to be borne to complete the repairs.
