Prakasam police crack case of attack on Dalit woman within hours, accused arrested

ONGOLE: Quick response of two home guards and the sub-inspector of Darsi police station in Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh not only saved the life of a Dalit woman but also helped in the speedy arrested of the accused who were trying to flee the town.

According to the superintendent of police Mallika Garg on Wednesday, the incident occurred during the wee hours of August 15, 2023, at the SC colony of Botlapalem village under the jurisdiction of Darsi police station. The accused Gangireddy Brahmareddy and his wife Gangireddy Pullamma attacked Kamunuri Mounika a Dalit while she was filling drinking water at a street tap.

They first threw chili powder on her and then stabbed her indiscriminately. Later they tied her limbs and took her away. They were demanding that her family withdraw cases filed against the accused in the past.

The accused resorted to this act to avenge the inter-caste marriage between their daughter Bhargavi and Mounika’s brother Sairam. While the accused were beating and stabbing the victim, her mother Jakkula Anuradha, who was injured, dialed 112 and within twenty minutes two home guards Sk Moulali, A Subhani and SI Ramakrishna rushed to the village.

In a swift action, they reached the house of the accused where the victim was held and saved her from the clutches of the Gangireddy family. A trainee IPS officer Ankita Surana also reached the spot and gave suggestions to the DSP concerned.

Three teams were sent to nab the accused and they found them at the Gangavaram bus stand waiting for a bus around noon on August 15, 2023. They were arrested and produced before the Court. The SP rewarded the entire team with cash awards and appreciated their timely response in saving the innocent woman from certain death. Meanwhile, the health condition of Mounika who was admitted to the Government Hospital was said to be out of danger.
