CHITTOOR: The Andhra Pradesh government has announced an ex gratia of Rs. 10 lakh to Constable Randhir, posted in Sri Satya Sai district, who lost eyesight in his left eye while trying to stop rioters at the violence that broke out in Punganur during TDP supremo Chandrababu Naidu’s rally on August 4.
Deputy Chief Minister Narayana Swamy, Chittoor collector Shanmohan Sagili and Chittoor district Superintendent of Police Y Rishanth Reddy held a press conference on Tuesday, where they made the announcement.
Shanmohan Sagili said that Randhir's permanent injury was a tragic consequence of the riots and that the doctors had done an initial surgery on him. He said that the State was also trying to arrange an eye transplant for Randhir.
SP Y Rishanth Reddy said that 13 policemen were seriously injured and 50 policemen suffered minor injuries during the violence at Punganur. He also said that the rioters attacked the policemen with beer bottles, sticks and stones. Rishanth Reddy said that Randhir was on duty near the Punganur border, nearly 30-km from Angallu, where the clash happened.
The SP also praised Randhir's dedication to duty and said that the violence would have gotten out of control if police officers like Randhir had not reacted on time.
Rishanth Reddy, replying to people who called the police biassed, said that the police were impartial and performed their duties righteously. He also said that cases were registered against 75 people who were attacking the police.
