AMARAVATI: The Supreme Court on Friday refused to grant a stay on the Andhra Pradesh High Court order staying the operation of the controversial GO No.1 that imposed restrictions on rallies and meetings on roads and highways in the state.

The Andhra Pradesh Government issued the GO in the wake of twin tragedies in Kandukur and Guntur at the political events of Telugu Desam Party chief Chandrababu Naidu. The High Court, hearing a petition filed against the order by CPI leader Ramakrishna has recently annulled the Government Order.

Challenging the High Court order, the Andhra Pradesh Government on Tuesday last filed a petition in the Supreme Court, seeking restoration of the GO. The Supreme Court, while hearing the matter on Friday, not only refused to grant the stay but ruled that the Andhra Pradesh government’s petition be heard by the high court itself.

Reacting to the Supreme Court ruling, Telugu Desam Party (TDP) Chief Nara Chandrababu Naidu said that it was a slap in the face for the YS Jaganmohan Reddy-led YSRCP Government. “Why did they have to go to the Supreme Court when the GO was being heard in the High Court? The government is wasting people's money,” he said. Chandrababu Naidu also said that he was opposed to the GO and wanted it to be repealed.

The GO No. 1 was issued by the State Government following the death of 11 persons in stampedes during rallies held by N Chandrababu Naidu in Kandukur and Guntur.

The Division Bench of the Supreme Court ordered that the state government petition be heard on January 23.
