HYDERABAD: In a significant move, the Telangana High Court on Tuesday gave a clean chit to senior IAS officer Y Srilakshmi in the Obulapuram mining case. The high court quashed the chargesheet filed against her by the CBI in the decade-long case, thus clearing all legal hurdles for the senior bureaucrat, who is tipped to become the next Chief Secretary of Andhra Pradesh.

The clean chit comes as major relief to Srilakshmi and boosts her chances of assuming the coveted and highest administrative position of the state. Only in February, 2022, the Telangana High Court dismissed her petition seeking to quash the pending CBI case and the supplementary chargesheet filed against her.

The woman IAS officer spent several months in prison as an under-trial following her arrest by the CBI in November 2011. Bellary mining baron and Karnataka former minister Gali Janardhan Reddy was the prime accused in the case.

The CBI filed the chargesheet against Srilakshmi on March 30, 2012, under Section 173(8) of the CrPC in CC No. 1 of 2012. The CBI investigated her role in the alleged illegal mining activity by the Obulapuram Mining Company in Bellary reserve forest in Anantapur.

In the supplementary chargesheet, the CBI alleged that Srilakshmi had misused her office during her term between 2007 and 2009 as secretary, industries and commerce. The Central agency claimed that she had misused powers vested in her by conspiring to grant illegal mining licences to favour Obulapuram Mining Company Private Limited and made her the sixth accused in the case.
