AMARAVATI: The Andhra Pradesh Women’s Commission on Monday issued a notice to Jana Sena Party President Pawan Kalyan for his alleged derogatory remarks on the village/ward volunteers being involved in women trafficking. He made these comments during a public meeting in Eluru on Sunday during the second phase of his Varahi Yatra.

In its notice, the Mahila Commission directed the actor-turned politician to offer his explanation within 10 days over his remarks against the volunteers. Speaking to the media, Women’s Commission Chairperson Vasireddy Padma said that the remarks made by Pawan Kalyan were highly objectionable and hurt the feelings of several women. The Jana Sena Chief could submit whatever proof he had with him regarding 30,000 missing women cases in Andhra Pradesh during the YSRCP government's rule, she said.

Padma said that the commission had received several complaints from single women, women associations and volunteers over the remarks made by Pawan Kalyan against them.

"Instead of making unnecessary remarks against the volunteers, the Jana Sena Chief should disclose the details of the intelligence officials who informed him about the missing cases in the State with the involvement of volunteers.

“It is not correct on the part of Pawan Kalyan to spit venom on volunteers in the State. We are suspecting a conspiracy against them. People will teach a befitting lesson to the Jana Sena Chief in the upcoming elections,” Padma added.

In Visakhapatnam, Minister for IT and Industries, Gudivada Amarnath, strongly condemned the remarks made by Pawan Kalyan about the volunteers. Amarnath said that volunteers were extending the benefits of nearly 25 welfare programmes to lakhs of eligible beneficiaries selflessly and with unflinching commitment.

“It is very sad that Pawan Kalyan made remarks about volunteers. Around 60 per cent of the volunteers are women. Volunteers played a pivotal role by serving the people during the COVID-19 pandemic. Women are afraid due to his behaviour. Pawan Kalyan should tender an open apology to women volunteers for his remarks,” Amarnath demanded.

YSRCP Vijayawada West MLA Vellampalli Srinivas criticised that Pawan Kalyan had slept in his farmhouse, while volunteers had actively participated in service oriented programmes during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Majority of the volunteers are women. If Pawan Kalyan has any respect towards women, he should immediately tender an open apology,” he demanded.

On the other hand, women volunteers across the state, staged a demonstration condemning the objectionable remarks made by Pawan Kalyan. In Eluru, volunteers burnt the effigy of Pawan Kalyan and demanded the actor-turned politician to tender an apology. In Vijayawada, the volunteers tore the posters of the Jana Sena Chief and threw slippers on it. They also suggested Pawan Kalyan to refrain from making such baseless allegations against volunteers in the future.
