Agent cheats, Gulf dream of 30 Konaseema women ends in Kerala jail
30 women from Dr BR Ambedkar Konaseema district are languishing in a Kerala jail after they were cheated by a recruitment agent
RAJAMAHENDRAVARAM: About 30 women from Dr BR Ambedkar Konaseema district of Andhra Pradesh are languishing in a Kerala jail after they were cheated by a recruitment agent with the false promise of providing them with employment in the Gulf countries.
They were arrested by the police on charges of using fake documents which were provided by their agent. Imprisoned for over three months now, the helpless women are crying for help and intervention from the state authorities.
The news broke out after the victims sent a WhatsApp video about their plight and narrating their tale of woes. According to their version, Rambabu, an agent from Kunavaram of Uppalaguptam Mandal in Konaseema district, exploited innocent women under the pretext of sending them to the Gulf countries.
He tried to fly out the 30-odd women, hailing from different parts of the district, to Kerala from the Shamshabad airport and planned their journey from there to the Gulf countries. However, his plan came a cropper with the officials detecting the fake visas during the immigration check. The women were subsequently arrested and lodged in a Kerala jail, pending hearing of their case.
On the initiative of Human Rights Welfare Association Vice-Chairperson Bhavani, five of the victims managed to obtain a conditional bail. The family members of the victims met the District Collector Himanshu Shukla along with Bhavani and appealed to him to take steps to free the other women as well.
