NEW DELHI: Only 5,876 aspirants were enrolled from Andhra Pradesh under the National Pension Scheme, the Centre informed in Parliament on Thursday. Union Minister of State for Labour and Employment Rameshwar Teli stated this in the Rajya Sabha in reply to a question from Vijaysai Reddy, YSRC Parliamentary Party Leader in the Upper House.

Elaborating on this, Rameshwar Teli said that the Union government had been striving to enroll about three crore small-time vendors, traders and those under self-employment by the year 2023-24. Under the National Pension Scheme, only 50,680 applicants were enrolled from across the country until July 17 of this year, he added.

"The COVID-19 pandemic had its severe adverse impact on the implementation of this scheme over the last two years. Many small-time vendors, traders and street sellers have already enrolled themselves under the 'Prime Minister Shram Yogi Man Dhan Scheme'. The Centre is trying to encourage all eligible beneficiaries to enroll themselves for the pension scheme with the help of the official machinery in the states," the minister said in Rajya Sabha.

Social media platforms are also being leveraged to extensively promote the significance of the national pension scheme, Rameshwar Teli added.
