Avatar 2 puts Telugu distributors in dilemma
We are just four days away from the release of the world's biggest film, Avatar: The Way of Water. This movie is set to hit the screens on December 16
HYDERABAD: We are just four days away from the release of the world's biggest film, Avatar: The Way of Water. This movie is set to hit the screens on December 16. It is also having a wide release across India. Even the advance bookings are great in all major cities of the country.
According to the reports, Avatar 2's runtime is 3 hours 12 minutes and it has been certified U/A by the CBFC board. The trade reports stated that Avatar 2 collected a gross of Rs. 7 crores for the opening day through advance bookings. Reportedly, over 1 lakh tickets were sold in multiplex chains like PVR, INOX and Cinepolis. Single Screens reported the sale of another one lakh tickets.
It is expected that Avatar 2 will earn around Rs. 16 crores in the first weekend through multiplexes. Overall, it may earn about Rs. 80-90 crores in the first weekend across all the screens in the country.
The film is doing a good pre-release business in the Telugu states as well. Disney India's UTV is releasing the film on its own in AP and Telangana. Apparently, it has offered 30-40% of the share in Avatar's collections to all distributors in Telugu states, but with a condition. This huge amount of share is offered only if the distributors screen the film even during the Sankranthi season. This condition has put distributors in a fix because big films like Waltair Veerayya, Veera Simha Reddy and Vaarasudu are gearing up for the Sankranthi release. Allocating screens for Avatar at that time will dent the business of these movies. So, the distributors are in a dilemma with respect to the rights of Avatar 2.
