HYDERABAD: Earlier, Bollywood used to be the face of Indian cinema but that is not the case anymore. South Indian films are ruling the country and are becoming prominent on an international level too. According to a report, ' South India: Setting Benchmarks for the Nation in Media & Entertainment', released by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), the South Indian film industry witnessed a mammoth growth of 96% in 2022.
The report shows that the Tamil film industry garnered Rs. 2,950 crore in revenues. It is followed by Telugu (Rs. 2500 crore), Kannada (Rs. 1570 crore), and Malayalam (Rs. 816 crore). The contribution of South Indian films is 52% of the estimated revenue of Rs. 15,000 crores at the all-India level.
In 2022, a total of 1691 films were released in India. Of them, 916 are from the southern film industries, constituting 54% of the total. Despite no big releases like RRR or KGF 2 in 2023, South Indian films are expected to generate similar numbers.
As per the analysts, South Indian films are working because the content is rich in culture and commercial elements. Their nativity is helping those movies to work big time at the box office. The larger-than-life commercial elements make the flick connect with a wider section of the audience. That is not the same case with Bollywood movies. They are simply failing to bring originality in terms of content.
There are big releases in 2023, like Rajinikanth's Jailer, Kamal Haasan's Indian 2, Vijay's Leo and Prabhas's Salaar this year. So, we can expect South Indian movies doing big business at a pan-India level this year too.
