HYDERABAD: Yesteryears Telugu actress Jamuna passed away in Hyderabad on Friday at the age of 86. She was reportedly residing in Jubilee Hills of Hyderabad and had been suffering from an age-related illness for quite some time. Jamuna was born on August 30, 1936, in Hampi, Karnataka. Her parents were Sri Nivasarao and Kausalyadevi. She acted in several films and was known for her roles in movies of legendary NT Rama Rao, Akkineni Nageswara Rao and Jaggayya. She acted in more than 198 movies which include films in all South languages besides Hindi.
Jamuna was her screen name while her actual name was Jana Bhai. She completed her education in Guntur district. At the age of 14, she made her debut with the film Puttillu.
Bangaru Papa, Vaddante Dabbu, Donga Ramudu, Santosham, Missamma, Tenali Ramakrishna, Chiranjeevulu, Chintamani, Bhagya Rekha, Gulebhakavali Katha, Ma Inti Mahalakshmi, Gundamma Katha, Bobbili Yuddham, Puja Phalam, Dorikithe Dongalu, Keelu Bommalu, Todu Needa, Sri Krishna Tulabharam, Letha Manasulu and Chadarangam are some of her notable hits.
Jamuna also established Telugu Artistes Association and successfully ran it for 25 years by performing several welfare activities.
Jamuna tested her luck in politics too. She contested for the Lok Sabha in the 1980s on behalf of the Congress Party and tasted victory from the Rajahmundry constituency. Later, she quit politics but campaigned for the BJP in the early 90s.
The mortal remains of Jamuna will be kept at the Film Chamber from 11 am on Friday, after which the final rites will be performed in Hyderabad.
Condolences have been pouring in for the bereaved family from the film fraternity and people from other walks of life.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy expressed grief over the demise of senior actress and former MP Jamuna.
“Jamuna's death brings an end to a golden era of artistes of Telugu cinema,” the Chief Minister said and conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family members.
