SECUNDERABAD: In a dramatic development, the Hyderabad police stumbled on Rs 1.64 crore hawala money stashed in a house following a fire accident at Regimental Bazar in Secunderabad late on Saturday night.
A fire broke out in a house belonging to one Srinivas, working as a DGM of a private company who also doubles up as a contractor in Regimental Bazar on Saturday night. Most of the things in the house caught fire. The fire brigade doused the fire and everybody heaved a sigh of relief as there was no human loss in the house.
House owner Srinivas, who was away outside when the fire broke out, reached home on being informed about the incident. As Srinivas was frantically looking for the money he stashed in the house, the police plunged into action and seized the unaccounted money to the tune of Rs 1.64 crores. On enquiry, the police learned that the money was destined to be circulated through hawala means.
The police have registered a case and are investigating it further. They suspect that this could be the handiwork of someone very close to Srinivas.
