Food Safety inspections uncover lapses at Lulu Hypermarket, JNTUH canteen

HYDERABAD: The Task Force team of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) conducted inspections at Lulu Hypermarket and Sri Sri Caterers (JNTU College Canteen), located at JNTU campus in Kukatpally on June 26, 2024.
During the inspections, the task force team found several lapses. These included infested and expired items at Lulu Hypermarket Mall. Additionally, the JNTUH kitchen was noted for lacking insect-proof screens, and its doors do not close tightly to prevent the entry of pests.

Infested items such as loose Atta Bread Mix (10kg) and Baguette Bread Mix (15kg) were discovered in the bakery unit and subsequently discarded.
Expired food items beyond their Use-by-date, including Sesame Seeds (20kg), Toned Milk (20L), various biscuit packets, Glaze (7.5kg), Gems (5kg), and Fruit Juice (2 packets), were also found and discarded.
Additionally, the updated FSSAI license copy was not displayed at the entrance of the premises. However, workers in the food section were observed wearing hair caps, gloves, masks, and uniforms. There were 40 FoSTaC trained supervisors present at the premises. Houseflies were found hovering near the meat storage area.
Pest control records and Medical Fitness Certificates of food handlers were available. According to the food safety team, notices will be issued and further action will be taken accordingly.
Sri Sri Caterers (JNTU College Canteen), Kukatpally:
The Food Business Operator (FBO) had an improper FSSAI license, and food handlers were found without proper headgear, gloves, and aprons. Semi-prepared food articles and cut vegetables were not appropriately covered and labeled.
The kitchen premises were found in unhygienic conditions with food waste directly thrown on the floor. The kitchen lacks insect-proof screens, and the doors do not close tightly to prevent the entry of pests.
Furthermore, Medical Fitness Certificates and pest control records were not available. A batch of Rice flour (3.5kg) found expired (31.05.2024) was discarded on the spot.
