HYDERABAD: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) warns food vendors and consumers not to use newspapers for food packaging since it is hazardous to one's health.

According to the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), the ink used in newspapers contains a variety of bioactive compounds with proven negative health effects, which might contaminate food and cause health problems if consumed.

FSSAI also has warned that printing inks, which may contain chemicals like lead and heavy metals, can leach into food, posing significant health risks over time.

Newspapers, due to their distribution, are frequently exposed to environmental conditions, making them susceptible to contamination by bacteria, viruses, or other pathogens, which could lead to foodborne illnesses, said FSSAI.
