Gated community urges residents to purchase water tankers in Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: For the first time in eight years, a gated community in Hyderabad has reportedly issued a notice urging residents to purchase water tankers due to the scarcity.

Rahul, a resident of Hyderabad, took to 'X' (formerly Twitter) to share that their society association has requested water tanker charges from April 24 to June 24, 2024. The decision to charge for water tankers was made due to the depletion of ground water in their area.

Additionally, the association advised residents to take steps to reduce water consumption in their homes, thereby collectively lowering the costs incurred on water tankers and reducing the costs per flat.

The notice from the association reads: "Dear Residents, our ground water source is depleting, resulting in a shortage of water supply from our bores. We are now calling for tankers every day to ensure continuous water supply. Starting from April, the water tanker requirement has increased to 1 tanker/day to fulfill the needs of our block. The current water tanker cost is 1,300 and is expected to increase to 1,500 shortly. In March, we spent Rs. 22,400 (418 per flat) on tankers, and this additional cost has been borne by the association to ease the burden on residents. Additionally, we spent Rs. 9,000 on repairing the temple bore. This situation is unprecedented, as we have not needed tankers in recent years, and it is expected that water scarcity will only worsen across the city over the next two months of summer.

"To maintain the financial stability of our funds and to meet water tanker costs going forward, water charges will be collected for maintenance. Expenses will be equally shared among all 43 flats, as we do not have water meters at this juncture. In our efforts to reduce costs and utilise funds efficiently, we are taking steps to order tankers from government instead of private tankers to reduce expenses (private: Rs. 1,300; government Rs. 1,100) whenever possible. We kindly request all residents to check for tap leakages (if any), use water carefully, and avoid unnecessary usage."
