HYDERABAD: Heavy rain lashed several parts of Hyderabad on Monday afternoon. The rain began around 2 pm and continued for two hours. Several low-lying areas of the city and major roads were inundated. Commuters, particularly two-wheeler riders, face hardships.

Several areas of the city, including Kukatpally, Alwyn Colony, Hydernagar, Secunderabad, Bowenpally, Maredupally, Begumpet, Madan Tank, Patny, Paradise, Chilakalaguda, RTC X Roads, Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills Madhapur, Gachibowli, Raidurgam, Kondapur, Borabanda, Naraynaguda, Himayatnagar, Abida, Koti, Begum Bazar, Sultan Bazar, Nampally, Basheerbagh, Ameerpet and Old City were flooded due to downpour.

The sudden heavy rainfall had also led to traffic coming to a standstill and power supply being interrupted in many areas. Following the heavy rains, the Disaster Response Force (DRF) wing of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) had issued a warning to people in low-lying areas to be alert for the next few days and asked them to stay indoors. "Moderate to Heavy rainfall is expected to continue over the city until Tuesday morning. Citizens could dial 040-21111111 or 9000113667 for GHMC-DRF assistance," the GHMC officials said in a statement.

Meanwhile, traffic officers including Madhapur DCP (Traffic) Harshavardhan, ADCP (Traffic) P Sreenivas Reddy, Madhapur ACP (Traffic) Ranaveer Reddy took live updates on congestion points and evolved necessary steps to provide free flow of traffic in the IT Corridor under Cyberabad Police Commissionerate limits on Monday evening.

On the other hand, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Hyderabad Centre had warned that thunderstorms accompanied with lightning very likely to occur in isolated places in Adilabad, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Jagityal, Rajanna Sirisilla, Karimnagar, Peddapalli, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Warangal, Hanamkonda, Jangaon, Medak, Rangareddy, Hyderabad, Medchal Malkajgiri, Sangareddy and Kamareddy districts of Telangana on Tuesday.

Taking to Twitter, T Balaji, popularly known as the Telangana Weatherman said that the heavy spell of rain completely moved away from Hyderabad city towards Nalgonda and Suryapet. "There are chances of one more spell of rain in Hyderabad on Monday night. Decent rains are expected in Narayanpet, parts of Medak and Kamareddy. Storms from Bidar will move towards Vikarabad and Sangareddy in the coming hours," Balaji said.
