HYDERABAD: After enduring a week-long severe heatwave, Hyderabad finally found relief as heavy rains and thunderstorms swept through several parts of the city on Tuesday evening.
Areas such as Kukatpally, Manikonda, HITEC city, Gachibowli, Hafeezpet, Miyapur, Bachupally, Begumpet, Khairatabad, and Banjara Hills experienced heavy downpours.
Light to moderate rain, accompanied by thundershowers and hailstorms with gusty winds (40-50 kmph), persisted in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) area for nearly two to three hours.
Not only did the city experience heavy rains and thunderstorms, but it also witnessed hailstorms in areas like Miyapur, Bachupally, Chandanagar, and several other regions in Telangana, as well as some districts in Telangana.
The sudden downpour led to waterlogged roads and traffic congestion throughout the city, with motorists stuck in jams for hours while leaving their offices on Tuesday evening.
Water seeped into metro stations and the Telangana Secretariat due to the heavy rains, and power cuts were reported across the city. Telangana Weatherman, T Balaji, who had predicted heavy rains and thunderstorms on May 6, issued a heavy rain alert for Hyderabad.
Taking to 'X' on Tuesday evening, Telangana Weatherman T Balaji said, "Heavy rain alert for Hyderabad. Severe thunderstorms from Sangareddy are now moving down into Nizampet, Kukatpally, and Lingampally. It's expected to cover most parts of the city in the next hour. Some areas may experience serious thunder, winds, and isolated hail as well. Pouring rains in KPHB. More storms lining up for Hyderabad. It's gonna be great stormy weather in coming three hours but on and off intensity. Stay alert."
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasted light to moderate rains, thunderstorms, with maximum surface wind speeds of less than 40 kmph in isolated places over Hyderabad, Khammam, Malkajgiri, Sangareddy, Medak, Warangal, Vikarabad, Mulugu, Siddipet, Jangaon, Hanamkonda, Mahabubnagar, Suryapet, Nalgonda, Nagarkurnool, and Bhuvangiri for the next few hours in Telangana.
