Intense rainfall hits parts of Hyderabad, thunderstorms predicted across Telangana

HYDERABAD: The city of Hyderabad witnessed intense spells of rain on Sunday, mainly across North Hyderabad, including areas like Kukatpally, Begumpet, Balanagar, and Bowenpally, which further extended to Nizampet, Miyapur, Jeedimetla, and Alwal.

According to weather experts, clouds formed around the city, increasing the chances of isolated and scattered rains in Hyderabad for the next two hours. These spells are not expected to be long-lasting. Meanwhile, intense rain continues in the Medak, Medchal, and Sangareddy districts of Telangana.

Scattered spells were also observed across Charminar, Chandrayanagutta, Shalibanda, Malakpet, and Rajendranagar. Another spell formed across Khairatabad and Ameerpet areas in Hyderabad. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds (30-40 KMPH) are very likely to occur at isolated places in several parts of Telangana on May 19, May 22, and May 23, 2024.

The highest rainfall of 64.3 mm was recorded at Nadigudem (Suryapet), with the state's average rainfall for the day at 2.4 mm against the normal of 0.4 mm on May 18, 2024.

Light to moderate rain/thundershowers are expected at isolated places for the next three days, with maximum temperatures ranging from 39°C to 42°C and minimum temperatures between 24°C and 27°C across Telangana.

Light rain/thundershowers are expected at isolated places until May 20, 2024; thereafter, dry weather is expected for the next two days. Maximum temperatures are expected to range from 36°C to 38°C, with minimum temperatures between 24°C and 26°C for the next two days in the GHMC area.

The highest maximum temperature of 40.1°C was recorded at Aswapuram (Bhadradri Kothagudem). The state's average maximum temperature for the day was 35.7°C, against the normal of 40.7°C on May 19, 2024. The highest maximum temperature recorded within the GHMC area was 37.1°C at Shaikpet (Hyderabad), with the GHMC's average maximum temperature for the day at 34.7°C, compared to the normal of 39.5°C on May 19, 2024.

Telangana Weatherman T Balaji said, "A very unique scene is unfolding as intense heat is expected during May 21-24, but a cyclone hitting straight into North Andhra Pradesh-South Odisha is likely to move into Telangana after May 25. If this scenario unfolds, we may experience some serious rainfall, especially in North and East Telangana (similar to July LPA). Tropical easterly jets are already in action, with monsoon dynamics picking up very fast.

"Though we have a lot of time, model outputs are fluctuating, and the chances of this event occurring are not clear. I'm requesting everyone to take some precautions, as the weather can take a massive turn after May 25. If that cyclone moves into Telangana, then we can conclude that summer is over for Telangana," he added.

May 19 (Yellow): Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds (30-40 KMPH) are very likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Siddipet, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, Rangareddy, Hyderabad, Medchal Malkajigiri, Vikarabad, Medak, and Nagarkurnool in Telangana.

May 20: NIL

May 21: NIL

May 22 (Yellow): Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds (30-40 KMPH) are very likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Mahabubabad, Warangal, Rangareddy, Vikarabad, Sangareddy, Mahabubnagar, and Nagarkurnool in Telangana.

May 23 (Yellow): Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds (30-40 KMPH) are very likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Khammam, Suryapet, Mahabubabad, Vikarabad, Sangareddy, Mahabubnagar, Nagarkurnool, Wanaparthy, Narayanpet, and Jogulamba Gadwal in Telangana.
