HYDERABAD: Dr. Sreedhara Panicker Somanath, Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation and Secretary of the Space Department, was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy degree by Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTUH) Hyderabad on Friday.

Dr. Somanath was awarded an honorary doctorate by JNTU Hyderabad Vice Chancellor Prof. Katta Narasimha Reddy during the varsity's 12th convocation for his significant contributions to science and technology.

ISRO Chairman congratulated graduating students on their personal and professional success, highlighting their passion, commitment, excellence, determination, focus, and learnability during the convocation ceremony.

Dr. Somanath, during the convocation address, revealed that ISRO would perform a significant manoeuvre to place Aditya-L1, India's inaugural space-based solar observatory, into its designated orbit L1.

This development comes after the recent launch of Aditya-L1, a space observatory designed dedicated to studying the Sun.

A total of 88,226 degrees were awarded, including 75,815 undergraduate, 11,088 postgraduate, 835 doctor of pharmacy, and 142 doctor of philosophy, along with 36 gold medals for academic excellence.
