HYDERABAD: Former IT and Municipal and Urban Development (MAUD) minister and BRS working president KT Rama Rao (KTR) said that very soon Hyderabad will become the first city in India that will be treating 100 percent of sewerage saving the city’s precious water bodies and eradicating waterborne diseases.

On the occasion of the inauguration first sewerage treatment plant (STP) in Kokapet with 15 MLD capacity on Sunday, he took to X and said that the remaining would become functional in the next few months. KTR was instrumental in planning and executing these STPs as the MAUD minister.

“As promised, Hyderabad will become the first major city in India to treat 100 percent of its sewerage by September 2023. As part of this effort, we are building several STPs with 1259.50 MLD for Rs 3,866,” he said.

The BRS Government took up 31 new STPs in Hyderabad city and all the STPs are nearing completion. At that time, 1950 million gallons of sewage was generated daily within Hyderabad Urban Agglomeration. Out of this 1,650 million gallons was generated in the GHMC area. Already 772 million gallons of sewage was being treated through 25 STPs and to treat the remaining 878 million gallons of sewage, the state government took the construction of 31 new STPs.

HMWSSB gave the responsibility of constructing these STPs in 3 packages at a cost of Rs.3,866.41 crore. Apart from treating 100 percent of the sewage by constructing these, and preventing the flow of sewage in catchment areas, the treated water could be used for non-human purposes. If these are completed and made available, Hyderabad would become the first city in South Asia to treat 100 percent of the sewage produced daily.
