Man held for morphing pics of women from Instagram, threatening extortion

HYDERABAD: The Cyber Crime Police Station has apprehended a man who has been accused of downloading pictures of random women from Instagram profiles, morphing them with explicit content using a web application, and subsequently threatening the victims to pay money. The victims were warned that if they failed to comply, their morphed images would be uploaded to explicit websites.
The accused has been identified as Manish Verma who is a resident of Hussaini Alam.
On November 23, 2023, a woman filed a complaint stating that her Instagram account was being misused. According to her, someone had downloaded her pictures, sent them to her friends and family, and posted morphed and explicit images on a fake account. The perpetrator demanded money under the threat of leaking these manipulated photos to pornographic websites. The victim, who endured mental harassment due to this extortion, sought immediate action.
Responding to the petition, a case was registered invoking sections 67A of the IT Act, and 345(D), 469, 506, 509 of the IPC. The investigative team apprehended the accused and sent him to judicial remand.
