Motorists skid off the road due to massive oil spill at Masab Tank
The NMDC flyover near Masab Tank witnessed chaotic scenes on Wednesday morning with scores of vehicles skidding off the road due to an accidental oil spillage
HYDERABAD: The NMDC flyover near Masab Tank in Hyderabad witnessed chaotic scenes on Wednesday morning with scores of vehicles skidding off the road due to an accidental oil spillage. The engine oil accidentally spilled off from a truck while it was proceeding from the Mehdipatnam area towards Lakdikapul. Several motorists, who lost balance of their vehicles as a result, fell down and sustained minor injuries.
Four huge drums, each carrying 800 litres of engine oil, fell from the truck when it was tackling the gradient of the flyover. The sudden spillage took the motorists driving behind the truck by surprise. With the oil quickly spreading down the slope there was no time for them to escape from the slippery surface. The freak mishap resulted in a heavy traffic jam all the way leading to Mehdipatnam and towards Lakdikapul on the other side of the flyover.
Several motorists, including women, sustained minor injuries due to the unexpected fall from their two-wheelers. Many youngsters who came to their rescue too faced difficulties in dealing with the slippery road while helping the injured and removing their vehicles from the middle of the narrow flyover. Meanwhile, traffic police, Disaster Response Force (DRF) and Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) staff rushed to the spot and tried to ease the traffic congestion.
Over 50 truckloads of wet soil was dumped on the flyover and the road leading to the flyover to cover the spillage areas and restore road traffic.
Meanwhile, the GHMC has advised the commuters on the Mehdipatnam-Lakdikapul stretch to be cautious and consider alternative routes till the oil was completely removed
