HYDERABAD: Did you know that the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has issued new driving licence rules in the country?

The new driving licence laws are expected to take effect on June 1, 2024, and would open up new avenues for obtaining a driver's licence in India.

According to the revised laws, no RTO driving test is necessary to obtain a driving licence beginning June 1, 2024. It appears that applicants can take the driving test at certified private driving schools and receive a driver's licence without taking a driving test at the RTO.

The Centre will reportedly provide certifications for private players to administer driving exams, but those without a recognised school diploma must take the driving tests at RTOs.

According to District Transport Officer and Joint Transport Commissioner C Ramesh, despite the new laws being announced in 2022, no private accredited driving schools have yet been established. In addition, private driving schools must have at least one acre of land to operate accredited driving schools.

According to the new guidelines, driving a car without a valid licence now carries a penalty of up to Rs 2,000. Severe penalties for minor driving include a Rs. 25,000 fine and possible action against the parents, as well as the cancellation of the vehicle's registration certificate.
