Soaring temperatures: IMD issues five-day alert for Telangana
Surface winds are forecast to be north-westerly during the next 24 hours, with wind speeds ranging from 6 to 10 kilometres per hour
HYDERABAD: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has advised people of Telangana to be on alert for the next five days, from May 16 to May 20, 2023, due to rising temperatures across the state.
According to IMD, Telangana is likely to experience dry weather on May 16 and 17, with scattered light to moderate rainfall beginning on May 18, 2023. Daytime temperatures in Hyderabad and neighbouring areas would probably range from 38°C to 40°C.
The summer season and isolated and scattered pre-monsoon thunderstorms would continue till then, and there wouldn't be much relief from the heat until the monsoon arrives, according to T Balaji, Telangana Weatherman.
"Telangana had a particularly hot day on May 15, with temperatures nearing 46°C in rural Telangana and 41°C in Hyderabad. A similar range of temperatures is expected to continue for the following five days, with overall dry weather over a large portion of the state," T. Balaji said.
The IMD predicts that the sky would be mostly clear, with maximum and lowest temperatures of 39°C and 26°C respectively. Surface winds are forecast to be north-westerly during the next 24 hours, with wind speeds ranging from 6 to 10 kilometres per hour.

Monsoon Onset expected from June 15 in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh
The monsoon season is set to begin on June 15 in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, May 27 in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, June 8 in Kerala and on June 11 in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Rayalaseema.
El Nino, Cyclone MOCHA and an unfavourable MJO all contributed to a delayed monsoon onset this year.
"A strong El Nino is developing," Telangana Weatherman T. Balaji said, adding, "don't expect excessive rains in Telangana this monsoon like the previous four years and the state may have deficit rainfall."
