HYDERABAD: Telangana Drugs Control Administration (DCA) on Friday raided the premises of Edla Hari Krishna, a self-proclaimed ‘rural medical practitioner’ operating the clinic ‘Padmavathi Care and First Aid Clinic’ in Nizampet village in Medak district.

During the raid on May 16, 2024, authorities discovered a large cache of medicines stocked at the clinic without any drug license. The inventory included 40 varieties of medicines, ranging from antibiotics to habit-forming drugs, anti-diabetics, analgesics, anti-ulcer drugs, and anti-hypertensives, valued at Rs. 70,000.

Detection of antibiotics raised concerns about indiscriminate sales by unqualified individuals, posing risks such as the emergence of Antimicrobial Resistance among rural populations. Raja Reddy, Drugs Inspector, Medak, conducted the raid under the supervision of Dr. J. Raju, Assistant Director, Siddipet. Samples were collected for further analysis, and subsequent investigations will result in legal actions against all offenders.

Notably, wholesalers/dealers supplying medicines to unqualified individuals without a drug license are also liable under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act. The Drugs Control Administration, Telangana, strictly regulates drug licenses for stocking and selling medicines, with violations punishable by imprisonment for up to five years.

To combat such illegal activities, surprise checks are intensified, and the public is encouraged to report complaints through the Toll-Free Number: 1800-599-6969.
