HYDERABAD: Telangana Drugs Control Administration on Friday uncovered a racket involving the sale of allopathic drug powder mixed as Ayurvedic Medicine for diabetes treatment in Ghatkesar.

The DCA conducted a raid on Sampurna Ayurveda Nilayam in Ghatkesar village, Medchal-Malkajgiri district, seizing stocks worth Rs. 1.5 lakhs. These stocks, claimed to be Ayurvedic medicines, contained allopathic anti-diabetic drugs such as Metformin, Glimepiride, and Gliclazide.

The partners of the firm, Mahammad Rafi Shaik and Nallabothu Venkateswarlu, are manufacturing and selling powders claimed to be ‘Ayurvedic Medicines,’ illegally mixing allopathic anti-diabetic drugs, at Sampurna Ayurveda Nilayam in Ghatkesar Village, Medchal-Malkajgiri District.

This offense is a serious violation under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, punishable with imprisonment. The raid was conducted by Dr. V. Balanaganjan, Assistant Director, Shameerpet, G. Indira Priyadarshini, Drugs Inspector, Medipally, and B. Lakshmi Narayana, Drugs Inspector, Uppal.

In another case, the Telangana Drugs Control Administration seized two overpriced medicines – ZenBact Ointment (Mupirocin Ointment IP 2% w/w) in Narsampet and Thymeen Injection (Thiamine Injection IP 100 mg/ml) in Godavarikhani. These medicines had MRPs significantly exceeding the Ceiling Price set by the Central Government.

The Telangana Drugs Control Administration also seized Femizoy syrup, an Ayurvedic medicine, in Jadcherla for falsely claiming to treat 'disorders of menstrual flow'.

On May 16, 2024, DCA officials seized 52 packets, each weighing 100 grams and labeled as ‘Sugar,’ containing a light green colored powder. This powder was found to contain allopathic anti-diabetic drugs Metformin (31.65%), Glimepiride (4.92%), and Gliclazide (3.02%).

Further investigations will be conducted, and appropriate action will be taken in accordance with the law against all offenders.

During special raids conducted on May 16-17, officials from the Drugs Control Administration, Mahbubnagar zone detected ‘FEMIZOY Syrup’. The label of the product falsely claimed it was indicated for the treatment of ‘irregular menstruation’ and ‘post menstruation’. The medicine was manufactured by Seasta Life Sciences Unit -2, Gopal Complex, Nr.Narmada Canal, Nr. Sanathal Circle, Sanathal, Ahmedabad, Gujarat and marketed by Crinova Healthcare Pvt. Ltd., Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

The advertisement of a medicine for the treatment of ‘disorders of menstrual flow’ is prohibited under the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954.

Mohd. Rafi, Drugs Inspector, Jadcherla, Sk. Rabiya, Drugs Inspector, Mahbubnagar, and A. Rashmi, Drugs Inspector, Wanaparthy are among the officers who carried out the raid.

Further investigation shall be carried out, and action shall be taken as per the law against all the offenders.

Persons who make misleading advertisements regarding drugs for treatment of certain diseases and disorders are punishable under Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954, with imprisonment which may extend to six months, or with fine, or with both."
