UoH students union condemns burning of transgender students' clothes in men's hostel, demands action
The students demanded identifying and taking action against the perpetrators of hate crimes against transgender students immediately
HYDERABAD: The Students Union of the University of Hyderabad (UoH) called for a protest on February 27, 2024, at 10 a.m. at the admin block on the UoH premises after the clothes of two transgender students were allegedly burnt in men's hostel K, where they were forced to reside.
According to the UoH students union, the clothes of Ambedkar Students' Association (ASA) general secretary Hritik and active member Tikku were burned on Saturday night in Men's Hostel K.
The UoH students union alleged that the administration continuously failed transgender students on campus, ignored previous instances of abuse, and betrayed their promise to formulate a Transgender Policy. This apathy directly led to continuing attacks on transgender students. The students union demanded to secure the safety and dignity of transgender students on campus.
The students demanded identifying and taking action against the perpetrators of hate crimes against transgender students immediately, and also constituting a committee to draft a Transgender policy in a time-bound manner. They also demanded that the Transgender policy be drafted in consultation with stakeholders to resolve issues pertaining to transgender students, including accommodation, safety, and provisions under the Nalsa judgment.
