HYDERABAD: The Urology department at Yashoda Hospitals in Somajiguda conducted the first REZUM surgery in the Telugu states on Thursday. This innovative procedure was successfully performed on 68-year-old farmer S. Anja Goud from Kamareddy, who cooperated well throughout.

The REZUM process is simpler than previous benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) therapies. Its advantages over other procedures include minimal or no bleeding, preservation of ejaculation, and maintenance of sexual function.

REZUM, the most effective and safe treatment for prostate patients, offers a novel minimally invasive therapy option for benign prostatic blockages. This complements existing therapy options for BPH, which include TURP, Bipolar TURP, and prostate laser enucleation.

Dr. V. Surya Prakash, Senior Urologist & Robotic Kidney Transplant Surgeon at Somajiguda, Yashoda Hospitals, explained, "This treatment is performed under local anesthetic with light sedation. A water vapor-delivering endoscope is passed into the urethra. A needle is inserted through the endoscope into the prostate, and water vapor at high temperature is delivered into the prostate for nine seconds. The treatment is repeated at three to four sites, depending on the size of the prostate. The supplied water vapor induces tissue necrosis, which heals through fibrosis, causing shrinking of the prostatic lobes and thereby resolving the obstruction."

Dr. V. Surya Prakash added, "Patients are sent home the same day with a per urethral catheter, which is removed after four days.
