HYDERABAD: Spencer’s Hyper Store in Bakaram Road was asked by the Telangana consumer court to refund Rs 320, the extra amount charged by the store on liquor, to one of its customers. The store was also fined Rs 12,000 as compensation for causing inconvenience and mental agony.

Kevin Sukirthy, the complainant, purchased liquor ‘Magic Port Wine’ from the store which costs Rs 370. He claimed that the store had charged Rs 80 more than the MRP all the three times he had purchased the liquor.

Though the excise officials instructed the store not to collect revised liquor prices on the stock already procured before December 18, 2019, the store had charged more than the MRP, said the complainant. The Telangana Government had hiked the prices of liquor by 10 percent in December 2019.

The store, in its defence, said that they were selling liquor at the prices approved by the Telangana State Beverages Corporation Limited (TSBCL). The store said that there was no deficiency on their part and sought dismissal of the complaint.

The court, in its verdict, said that according to rules, a stock of a particular brand with new MRP rates would be delivered once the old stocks were sold out. Therefore, charging more than MRP rates would amount to deficiency of service, said the court.
