Absconding for 29 years, two cheating case accused arrested in Kerala by Telangana CID
The accused had widely publicised their firm in newspapers besides distributing brochures encouraging deposits from the public by promising attractive rates of interest
HYDERABAD: Two white-collar offenders, who had been on the run for 29 years, were arrested in Ernakulam of Kerala by a Telangana CID team in connection with a cheating case.
According to the police, the two main accused, Sherley Tommy (70) and CI Joseph (67) from Ernakulam, founded M/s Travancore Finance and Leasing Company in Hyderabad with third accused T J Mathew and fourth accused M M Tommy.
The firm was registered with Andhra Pradesh Registrar of Firms in Hyderabad on September 1, 1986 (registration No. 6159). The firm's 10 partners were M M Tommy, Sherley Tommy, Mary Mathew, T J John, Benney Pal, G V Seleven, C J Joseph, K Raman Pillay, Joseph, and Rajan John.

They had received deposits worth Rs 12.55 lakhs, of which Rs.94,921.48 were reimbursed, leaving a balance of Rs11,58 lakhs plus interest. The accused violated the rules and falsified the entries to siphon off the amount. As part of the criminal misappropriation, they cheated their depositors by not paying the dues to them.
On January 29, 1994, accused M M Tommy, Sherley Tommy, C I Joseph were arrested and sent to judicial custody. The accused, after obtaining bail, did not attend the court. Non-bailable warrants (NBWs) were issued against them as they remained untraceable since 1994.
The CID, after a case was registered under relevant sections of the IPC at the CCS police station in Hyderabad, investigated it and filed a chargesheet in the court.
The accused Sherley Tommy and C.I Joseph were apprehended by the CID team at Ernakulam in Kerala before they were in a court.
CID Inspector J Lingaswamy, Sub-Inspector D Ramesh, Head Constable D Narsaiah, Constable Anand and Woman Police Constable Anitha were part of the team that went to Ernakulam. They apprehended the accused and brought them to Hyderabad before they were remanded to judicial custody.
