A farmer in Nalgonda died by suicide after his crops failed and he incurred significant debt.
NALGONDA: A farmer in Nalgonda district died by suicide following crop failure and accruing a large debt.
Jatawat Krishna, 40, cultivated cotton, chilli peppers and oranges on nine acres of land in Chintapally village, Peddavura Mandal, Nalgonda district.
Krishna's orange orchard had been suffering due to a lack of water. In an attempt to save his crop, he recently commissioned the drilling of six boreholes. However, this was unsuccessful, and the trees subsequently died. As a result of this costly but ultimately futile endeavour, Krishna found himself in approximately Rs 10 lakh debt.
Overwhelmed by his financial situation, Krishna consumed pesticides. His family attempted to transport him to the hospital, but he died on the way.
