KAMAREDDY: A major cyber fraud case has come to light in Kamareddy district, where scammers posing as Delhi police officers duped a local resident, Kishan Rao, of Rs 9.29 lakh.

The incident occurred when Kishan Rao received a phone call from an unknown number a few weeks ago. The caller introduced himself as a senior police officer from Delhi and falsely accused Kishan Rao of involvement in drug trafficking and money laundering cases.

The scammer threatened that a special police team was on its way from Delhi to arrest Kishan Rao. He offered Kishan Rao an alternative, stating that if he wished to avoid arrest, he must transfer all the money in his bank accounts to their specified accounts. The caller promised that the money would be returned once the case was cleared.

Frightened by the threats, Kishan Rao complied and transferred a total of Rs 9.29 lakh in multiple transactions. As time passed and he did not receive his money back, Kishan Rao became suspicious. When he tried calling the number, he found it was switched off, prompting him to realise he had been scammed. He immediately reported the incident by calling 1930, the cyber crime helpline, and also filed a complaint with the local police.

Kamareddy police have registered the case and started an investigation into the fraud. They have urged the public to be cautious of such calls and to verify identities before acting on any financial demands.
