HYDERABAD: TSRTC MD V C Sajjanar has warned the public to be wary of the fake police phone calls from cyber criminals who are threatening innocent people, claiming that the drug parcels are booked in the recipient's name in FedEx.

The cybercriminals are said to have threatened innocent people in the guise of police through phone calls, saying that the victims are having links with terrorist organisations.

VC Sajjanar, through his X handle, shared on Sunday a similar incident where an IIT Hyderabad PhD scholar fell victim to one of these scams, losing Rs.30 lakh to fraudsters. According to Sajjanar, the cybercriminals called the scholar, claiming that the scholar had opened joint accounts with terrorist organisations and that suspicious transactions had occurred. The caller even went as far as to threaten the scholar's family, forcing him to stay indoors for six days under the guise of house arrest and forcing him to pay Rs. 31 lakh. The fraudsters said they would return the money if the victim's account statements were correct.

However, as the fraudsters didn't turn up later, the scholar eventually realised he had been duped and reported the incident to the cybercrime police and informed the same to the former Cyberabad Commissioner.

On this, Sajjanar, expressing concern over the educated people falling prey to fraudsters, emphasised the importance of reporting any suspicious calls or incidents to the authorities, urging individuals to contact the cybercrime helpline number 1930 or their local police station if cybercriminals have targeted them.
