Landslides in Vijayawada claim four lives, rescue operations underway
Landslides in Vijayawada's Moghalrajpuram area result in four deaths, with rescue operations continuing.
VIJAYWADA: Four people were killed in landslides triggered by heavy rains in Vijayawada's Moghalrajpuram area, near Sunnapubatti Centre on Saturday.
The deceased have been identified as Meghana (25), Lakshmi (49), and Annapurna (55). The identity of the fourth victim remains unknown. As rescuers were attempting to retrieve the body of the fourth victim, another landslide occurred, further complicating rescue efforts. It is suspected that the deceased might be a worker from Kolkata.
Six others were injured in the landslide and have been rushed to a local hospital. The condition of two of the injured is reported to be critical.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu expressed shock over the incident and conveyed his condolences to the families of the deceased. He described the loss of four lives as tragic and announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 5 lakh for each of the victims' families. The Chief Minister assured the affected families of the government's support and instructed authorities to evacuate residents from vulnerable areas. He urged the public to cooperate with the officials during these operations.
In a related incident, landslides also occurred on the Indrakeeladri hill due to the relentless downpour in Vijayawada. Boulders fell onto the Protocol Room, but a major disaster was averted as the Ghat Road had been closed in advance.
