HYDERABAD: High tension prevailed in Nizam College here on Saturday after students stormed the principal's chamber and laid siege to it, demanding hostel privilege to under-graduate students. Several students were taken into preventive detention by the police whose attempts to evict the agitators from the principal's chambers proved futile.
The students of Nizam College have been agitating for sometime now demanding that under-graduate girl students be accommodated in the newly-constructed hostel block. The agitators claimed that orders were given to allocate rooms in the new block only to post-graduate students.
Pressing for their demand, the protesters stormed the principal's chamber on Saturday, prompting the police to intervene. With the agitators refusing to come out of the chamber, the police detained several of them to diffuse the situation, leading to chaos and tension on the campus.
Earlier in the week, hundreds of students squatted on the road at Basheerbagh junction, raising slogans against the principal. The spontaneous dharna caused a major traffic jam.
