HYDERABAD: Microsoft announced on Thursday that the company would expand its investment in data centres in Hyderabad, Telangana. They intend to establish six data centres in Telangana, with each data centre serving an average of 100 MW of IT load.

These data centres are critical to Microsoft's ambition of bolstering its cloud infrastructure to better serve Azure customers in India and around the world. All six data centres are expected to be deployed in phases over the following 10-15 years.

Microsoft announced its first captive data centre investment of three campuses early in 2022, demonstrating Telangana's and Microsoft's commitment to helping each others flourish. While the initial investment pledge called for three data centres in Hyderabad, each with at least 100 MW of IT capacity, they now plan to build three more totaling six data centres in Telangana.

The upcoming developments were discussed at the Microsoft Cafe in Davos in the presence of K.T. Rama Rao, Minister for IT, Industries, and MA&UD, and Jayesh Ranjan, Telangana Principal Secretary for ITE&C, Industries, and Commerce Departments, and Ahmed Mazhar, President (Asia) Microsoft.

Telangana government had previously inked an MoU with Microsoft to facilitate a variety of useful activities such as talent development, internship programs and cloud usage. Telangana was working with Microsoft Azure and others as part of its cloud adoption to ensure that citizen services have the greatest infrastructure as part of its tech stack.

On this occasion, Minister for IT, MA&UD, and Industries K. T. Rama Rao said: “Microsoft and Hyderabad have had a very long-term mutually beneficial relationship and I am very happy to learn that Microsoft will expand in Telangana with such huge digital infrastructure projects. I look forward to seeing Microsoft continue to grow in the state.”

Ahmed Mazhari, President, Asia, Microsoft Incorporated, said: “Hyderabad, Telangana is one of our most important markets across the world and we will continue to invest in the city. The data center projects we will deploy in Telangana are the some of the fully owned Data Center projects in India by Microsoft. Apart from Data Centers, we will work with the Government to identify special projects and support them in implementing them''.
