Palvai Sravanthi is Congress candidate for Munugode by-election
Palvai Sravanthi as its candidate for the impending by-election to the Munugode Assembly constituency in Telangana
HYDERABAD: Putting an end to a month-long suspense, the Congress party on Friday chose Palvai Sravanthi as its candidate for the impending by-election to the Munugode Assembly constituency in Telangana. The All India Congress Committee (AICC), in a press release, confirmed the candidature of Sravanthi.
The press release, issued by AICC General Secretary Mukul Wasnik, stated that Congress President Sonia Gandhi had approved the candidature of Palvai Sravanthi for the Munugode by-election.
Sravanthi, the daughter of veteran Congress leader and former minister Palvai Govardhan Reddy, had been a frontrunner in the race for the party ticket. The by-election was necessitated by the resignation of Komatireddy Rajgopal Reddy, the Congress party MLA from this constituency. Rajgopal Reddy also resigned from the party before eventually joining the BJP fold.
Sravanthi has been active on the ground and doing her home work in anticipation of party's nomination for the contest. But there were apprehensions about it till a few days back amid reports that the Congress high command was actually toying with the idea of fielding Komatireddy Venkat Reddy, the older brother of Rajgopal Reddy, to spice up the by-poll and reclaim the seat.
But with Venkat Reddy's reluctance, the party eventually opted for Sravanthi as their best bet for the by-election.
