HYDERABAD: The Telangana Government has announced that it will allot around 10,000 double bedroom (2BHK) houses to the poor living on the Musi River bank in the city. The move came a day after Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD) Minister KT Rama Rao (KTR) announced that the State Government would distribute 70,000 2BHK houses in five to six phases.

The decision to allot the 10,000 2BHK houses was taken in a meeting of MLAs under the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits on Thursday, which was headed by KTR. The MLAs unanimously requested the allocation of these houses to the poor living in dire conditions on the banks of Musi.

In the meeting, KTR said that the people living on the Musi River bank were mostly poor and had been living in that area for generations. He said that the move to allot the 2BHK houses would bring great relief to their lives.

KTR also said that the State Government would take measures to prevent river flooding and plans would be drawn for the future. "Once the encroachments are removed, the Musi riverfront project works can be set in motion. The preliminary planning for the project has already been completed by the State Government," he said.

"The 2BHK houses will be allotted to eligible beneficiaries in a transparent manner. The Government has already started the process of identifying beneficiaries," a release by the Government said.

"The State Government has also said that it will take measures to prevent river flooding. This includes dredging the river, building bunds, and planting trees along the river banks. The Government has also said that it will develop the Musi riverfront as a tourist destination," it added.
