VC of Telangana University, Nizamabad, Ravinder Gupta, was arrested by the ACB for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 50,000 for setting up an exam center
HYDERABAD: Vice-Chancellor of Telangana University, Nizamabad, Ravinder Gupta, was arrested by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Saturday for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 50,000 for setting up an exam center.
ACB officials caught Gupta red-handed while accepting the bribe at his residence in Tarnaka. Gupta had allegedly demanded the establishment of an examination center at Bheemgal in Nizamabad district in return for the bribe.
"A vigilance investigation will be conducted over the complaints received against Gupta in the past. We are currently casting out a search in Gupta's residence as well as the university. Once that completed, we will arrest and produce him in court for remand," shared DSP Sudarshan.
ACB officials are likely to file a case against him under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
Gupta's arrest comes at a time when Telangana University is facing a number of controversies. The university has been embroiled in a tussle between the Vice Chancellor and the governing body over the appointment of a new registrar. The governing body had recently appointed Professor Yadagiri as the new registrar, but Gupta had refused to accept his appointment.
Gupta's arrest is likely to further add to the chaos in Telangana University. It remains to be seen how the university will function in the absence of its Vice Chancellor.
