HYDERABAD: The gates of Babli project built by the Maharashtra government on the upstream of Telangana's Sriram Sagar Reservoir Project (SRSP) have been lifted due to heavy inflow.

Due to the release of water, the water levels will rise. Farmers and fishermen were advised to be alert. The gates were lifted on the Supreme Court's order. They will be open for 120 days from July 1 to October 28.

This will also come as a relief to farmers of North Telangana as the water from the Babli project will flow into Ayakattu and in the districts like Adilabad, Karimnagar, Warangal, and Nizamabad.

The Babli project was constructed by the state government near Dharmabad in Maharashtra, 80 km away from SRSP. The Past governments have approached the Supreme Court, claiming that this has prevented the flood from coming to SRSP and that the Ayakattu may become questionable. Against this backdrop, the supreme court ordered the gates of the Babli project to be kept open from July 1 to October 28 each year.

While the full water capacity of the Babli project is 2.74 TMC, one TMC water remained on Thursday, and on gates being lifted, the water will flow through the Godavari into the SRSP
