HYDERABAD: The Balapur Laddu, a highly coveted offering during the Ganesh Chaturthi festival in Telangana, set a new record by being sold for Rs 30.01 lakh.

Kolanu Shankar Reddy won the auction, surpassing the previous record of Rs 27 lakh from last year. The bidding for the laddu started at Rs 1,116 and gradually increased, finally reaching Rs 30 lakh when no further bids were placed.

Balapur Ganesh's laddu auction is one of the most anticipated events during the festival in the state. Every year, a 21 kg laddu is offered as a naivedyam to Lord Ganesh at Balapur. The tradition began in 1980, and the first laddu auction was held in 1994, when the laddu was sold for Rs 450. Since then, the auction price has steadily increased, with the laddu fetching hundreds of thousands and eventually reaching millions.

The auction has become more regulated in recent years. This year, organisers introduced a new rule requiring participants to deposit money in advance to take part in the bidding. The auction took place at Balapur Bodrai after the final pooja on Tuesday, with the Balapur Ganesh Utsav Samiti conducting the event. The proceeds from the auction will be used for development projects.

The Balapur Laddu auction has now completed 30 years, marking a significant milestone in its history. The Ganesh pandal was designed to resemble the Ayodhya Ram Mandir this year.
