BRS MLAs arrive in autorickshaws for Assembly, demand Rs 10 lakh compensation for drivers

HYDERABAD: BRS MLAs and MLCs staged a dharna at the Assembly premises on Friday against the Government's stand on autorickshaw drivers.

MLAs Harish Rao, Talasani Srinivas Yadav, Devireddy Sudhir Reddy, Sabitha Indra Reddy, Malla Reddy, Vivekananda, Madhavaram Krishna Rao, Padi Kaushik Reddy, MLC Satyavathi Rathod among others came to the Assembly in autorickshaws from the MLA quarters in Hyderguda to make their point.

On this occasion, Harish Rao said that after the Congress party came to power in the State, the lives of autorickshaw drivers had become a mess as atleast 21 drivers committed suicide in the last two months.

He said that though he welcomed the Government's move to provide free bus travel for women, the Government also had the responsibility to protect autorickshaw drivers as well.

"Atleast 6.5 lakh autorickshaw drivers are unable to pay their EMIs due to lack of demand and many are now on the roads," Harish said.

The BRS leaders demanded justice for autorickshaw drivers across the State and asked the Government to grant Rs 10 lakh ex-gratia to the kin of drivers who committed suicide.

Meanwhile, the police stopped the BRS MLAs who tried to enter the Assembly holding placards that the Government should support autorickshaw drivers. This led to an argument between the police and the BRS leaders.
