CBI seeks five-day custody of Kavitha in liquor policy scam case

NEW DELHI: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) sought a five-day remand of BRS MLA K Kavitha who was jailed at Tihar Prison. Kavitha was arrested by ED on March 15. She was remanded to ED custody and later to judicial custody.

Kavitha was produced before CBI Special Judge Kaveri Baweja at the Rouse Avenue Court here on Friday. The court recently granted permission to CBI interrogate Kavitha in jail. She was arrested on Thursday.

Senior advocate Nitesh Rana appeared for Kavitha and Senior Advocate Vikram Chaudhary also appeared for her through a video conference facility.

Vikram Chaudhary argued that there was no provision in CrPC for CBI to interrogate the accused in another case. “Notice was not given to me on CBI's plea to interrogate the BRS leader. An application was moved before this court to interrogate Kavitha by CBI. There is no provision in CrPC which enables an investigating agency to interrogate an accused in another case," Chaudhari said.

The CBI reiterating that Kavitha played a pivotal role in the scrapped Delhi Liquor Policy Scam, sought five-day custody of Kavitha. “During her interrogation, she didn't give satisfactory replies regarding her role. Her replies are contrary to the documents recovered by CBI. She is concealing facts that are exclusively in her knowledge. Earlier also she has not joined the investigation despite notice. She is the main kingpin or conspirator. We need five days of custody,” the CBI counsel said.

Court said that it would pass order at 2 PM on Kavitha's application seeking copy of CBI's application seeking to interrogate her.

The court would then hear submissions on CBI's remand application in the post lunch session after pronouncement of order.
