Congress-backed INTUC, CPI-affiliate AITUC sweep Singareni union polls

Out of the 11 areas that comprise the SCCL coal belt, INTUC won in six areas and the AITUC won in five areas. Polling took place from 7 am to 5 pm in a peaceful atmosphere on Wednesday.

HYDERABAD: Congress-backed Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) and CPI-affiliated All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) swept the trade union elections of the public sector Singareni Collieries Company Ltd (SCCL) held on Wednesday.

The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) affiliated-TBJKS, which was a recognised trade union in the past, received a major drubbing in these elections. Even as the Congress and the CPI contested the recent Assembly election in an alliance, they contested separately in the Singareni elections.

Out of the 11 areas that comprise the SCCL coal belt, INTUC won in six areas and the AITUC won in five areas. Polling for the crucial trade union election took place from 7 am to 5 pm in a peaceful atmosphere on Wednesday. Division-wise counting of the votes began at 7 pm.

According to an SCCL labour office statement, 37,468 votes were polled out of the total votes of 39,773, which was around 94.20 percent. Illendu polled the highest votes of 98.37 percent and Srirampur and Ramagundam-3 polled lowest with 93 percent each.

In all 13 unions contested in these elections, but the main fight was between the INTUC and the AITUC. While AITUC won the Bellampalli, Mandamarri, and Srirampur areas of the Bellampalli region and Ramagundam-1 and 2 areas of the Ramagundam region, the INTUC won the Ramagundam-3 region. INTUC also won the Kothagudem corporate headquarters, Manuguru, Illendu, Kothagudem, and Bhupalapally areas.
